A fluorescence image of a cerebeller slice from a of a virally-infected mouse. Two weeks earlier, adeno-associated virus was introduced into the cerebellum by a single microinjection.  The virus encodes yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) coupled to the light-activated ion channel channelrhodopsin-2, allowing visual identification of neurons whose activity may be controlled with light.
